Mycena is a large family of mushrooms that are usually no more than several millimeters across the bonnet. They are generally recognised by a small bonnet or bell shaped top sitting on top of a very thin stem or stalk. They are greyish to white in colour and generally found in large colonies on rotting wood.

The Mycena family is quite large with many individual species.  About 58 of these species are bioluminescent; meaning, they glow in the dark.

It is thought that the microscopic root system of all fungi, which is called Mycelium, connects all of the forest plants and trees as a vast communication network.
